SATOR Square - 2022
This project was created for an A&S competition for a local barony Anniversary. It is a Sator Square, a ancient design that was revitalized and romanticized by medieval Europeans. It can be read as a palindrome grid, the same in multiple directions and translates to:
Sator - farmer/gardener,
Arepo – name (proper noun),
Tentet – holds,
OPERA – works
Rotas - wheels.
“The Farmer/Gardener Arepo holds and works the wheels/plough”
Originating in Ancient Rome, it has been found on artifacts on nearly every continent. Though experts don't know exactly what it's significance was. In medieval Europe, however, the Greek and Roman periods became highly romanticized and mystical qualities began to be attributed to the design. This embroidered version is on cloth, which was said to be able to aid women in childbirth.
